Logo design process – Ezie Designs

4.11.2009 | My Blog

ezielogoHere I will share some information about my personal logo and reveal a little about the logo design process behind the ‘Ezie’ logo.

Before I began work on creating my logo I had to come up with a name that would be used for years to come as my freelance designer profile. I wanted something catchy, strong and ultimately original to reflect my work.

The solution for this was a play on my real name: Euan Mackenzie. I took my first name intial and combined it with the last three letters of my surname: E-zie.

I felt this was a good solution as it is a word that does not exist making it unique and original.

At first I decided to call my freelance business ‘Ezie Designs’, however after a few months in use I felt that it was not strong enough and also the ‘Designs’ part brought down the uniqueness of it as so many designers end thier identity with ‘Designs’

I then opted for a slight re-brand, if you will, to just ‘Ezie’. This felt far more unique and ‘punchy’

Logo design

Throughout the logo design process I mainly developed one idea. This was using the E and the Z in the name as the icon. The reason for this is simply because saying these two letters together results in a very similar sound to ‘ezie’.

sketches

Here are a few sketches before arriving to the final idea. By sketching out concepts I combined the ‘Z’ with the ‘E’ so that it looked like both a single ‘E’ as well as an ‘E’ and a ‘Z’.

Here are some typography experiments before arriving at my final typeface. All of these fonts are custom made and all but the bottom right are inspired by the shape of the icon.

This is how the logo and the final typeface are lined up alongside eachother.

Oh my God Euan, I really loved this article. It is very impressive and I love how you sketch the logo before actually creating it. Very few designers do this… and I know that the best result you ever get is when you first sketch the logo and then actually create it.

Great job my friend, keep up the great job…. this is SO GREAT!

Best Regards,
Wassim

I didn’t realize until I saw the sketches how leaf-like your logo is. I kind of always thought of it as a square and circle together, but now all I can see is leaf! I love it.

I like the font you chose in the end, but I think I rather the last one of the four type experiment logos.

@Cecilie: Thanks! Glad to inspire! I had many more sketches of other ideas but i threw them out. *note to self: never throw out old sketchbooks!

@wassim: Thanks. I much prefer sketching out ideas beforehand, although i go straight to illustrator sometimes when i have a mental picture of what i want :)

@kelton: Ill be sure to do more, stay tuned :)

@Jonze: yeah, um, that represents how in touch with nature i am! The 4th type was my second choice. The final one just clicked for me though.

Hello Euan Mackenzie

I am Euan McKenzie from Australia. I am 8 years old. I love drawing and designing pictures and I am now making a book about Sonic Underground. That’s a cartoon character. I love your designs and I would love to do somethng like that when I grow up.
I have been to Scotland and went to see my great grandma for her 100th birthday.
I went to Cuba and was in hospital for 2 days. There was a crab in the bathroom.

Hello Euan,

Thanks for the comment. That’s great, I love Sonic! Keep up the drawing, it certainly helps if you want to do something like what I’m doing. Its fun too!

I hope you enjoyed Scotland, I’d love to visit Australia one day. It’s a shame i don’t have a 100 year old Australian grandma to visit on her birthday!

Cuba didn’t sound too fun. Hope you flushed the crab down the toilet!

Euan
